4 Plants Your Garden Can’t Live Without

Before you know it, winter’s gloom will melt away, and the warmth of the springtime sun will be back in its full glory. If you’re itching to get a head start on the beautiful new beginnings that happen with the onset of spring, there’s no better way than to begin planning for a garden.

Gardening doesn’t have to be hard. Whether you have a full-blown yard or just an apartment balcony, you can grow a beautiful garden anywhere there’s dirt, sun, and a little bit of effort. If you’re unsure about having enough space or afraid your thumb may not be green enough, no problem. We’ve rounded up four easy-to-grow must-haves to help you enjoy the bounty of a super-simple garden.

Chives

Chives are a member of the onion family and have beautiful and edible flowers. Plus, herbal folklore says that hanging bunches of chives in your home will keep diseases far, far away.

Chives are often touted as the easiest plant to grow for any gardener. They can grow in a pot on your windowsill, as part of your outdoor landscape, or in a random spot of dirt. But be forewarned – chives can easily take over your garden. If they do, that’s okay. They’re easy enough to dig up and move to another spot.

Green Onions

We couldn’t recommend chives without also suggesting green onions. Low in calories and high in flavor, green onions contain plenty of health-promoting antioxidants, fiber, and micronutrients, including vitamins B, C, and K.

Basil

Whether in a summertime salad or a hearty pesto, basil is a highly versatile, flavor-packed herb. Sweet basil is linked to a number of health benefits, one of which is normalizing high blood pressure. Holy basil, another popular variety, can also help lower your blood sugar and cholesterol, reduce joint pain, and protect against infection.

When it comes to planting, save yourself the headache of growing it from seed and grab a small plant from a nursery or your grocery store. Basil grows easily and amazingly well in pots, so make sure to choose one that’s 12” deep, and keep the soil moistened and well-drained.

Lettuce

Lettuce is a household staple that comes in many varieties. It’s full of important nutrients, such as fiber, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K. It comes in lots of colors, ranging from dark green to yellow, and some even have reddish hues.

But there’s a little-known fact about lettuce: you can grow lettuce indoors year-round! Just make sure you have enough sunlight, and you can grow it right on your windowsill or underneath grow lights. Lettuce is super easy to plant, so growing it from seed is just fine. If you’re planting indoors, look for loose-leaf varieties rather than head lettuces, which are more challenging to grow inside.

It’s Never Too Late to Garden

Much like how a good spring cleaning will freshen up your house, having a few edible plants growing nearby can encourage cooking creativity and boost your confidence. You don’t have to have acres of land or be a master gardener either. Starting off with a few of the most common and easiest to grow plants is an exciting way to get your garden off to a good start.

The time to plan is now. Start thinking through how you want your garden to look and get ready for some delicious discoveries!

Patient Testimonials

Dr Don Sharnowski is a doctor who is above and beyond all other doctors! Probably his most outstanding quality is that he LISTENS to what his patients say. He is willing to explain things to his patients in terms they can understand. Dr Don treats his patients with wisdom, understanding, gentleness, care, encouragement and he is willing to "go the extra mile" to give his patients the proper treatment they need. He does not treat patients like they were on an assembly line or like he is rushing them out the door. Dr Don has fixed many of the problems I had at my first visit, one of which I had endured for 3 years. Dr Don was able to fix that problem in 2 weeks when others had not. Dr Don has also helped me loose 40 lbs so far. My total recovery is still an ongoing process, but should be a cinch with Dr Don's expert help! Thank you, Dr Don! You are an awesome answer to prayers!

Dr Don Sharnowski is truly an amazing Doctor. He listens to his patients and treats in a very complete way. He is very knowledgeable because he never stops learning. He is a great communicator and will help you learn better ways to be healthy if you will actually do what he teaches.

Don (Dr Sharnowski) is truly one of a kind. He is warm, inviting and incredibly generous with his time, but also really knowledgeable about the body and everything within. You won't find crystal balls here. You'll find a super nice guy in sneakers who also sells farm fresh eggs at the counter. I went in expecting to get adjusted (and was scared, because I'd never seen a chiro before). Instead, what I experienced was someone who actually sat down and listened to my history, connected the dots between several ailments (instead of jumping to prescribe one drug apiece to treat each one), and explained things that no one had ever taken the time to do. I was there about my back specifically, but we talked about my whole health. Instead of just prescribing an anti inflammatory (which is what my other doc did), he explained why we get inflammation in our bodies, and how to help reduce it with what we eat. I've also been on thyroid medication for over 10 years, and he actually explained what the thyroid is, and what the drug I take is, and what it does. But not in a defensive or overly crunchy way. He just openly explained in a way that I could understand it. I highly recommend Don to anyone with a body who wants to feel better. His approach is approachably holistic. Just common sense, whole body-centered treatment.
